Our current Writing Trait focus is Sentence Fluency. After we wrote about a special time we had with somebody, we read and examined the sentences in Jane Yolen's book, Owl Moon, in which she describes a special time between a young girl and her father. Yolen uses different words to start her sentences and varies the length of them as well. We then went back to our own writing and collected data on our sentences. In connection with our inquiry into Data Handling we used an online graphing tool to represent our data of the first word in each of our sentences. After revising and editing our sentences, we published a final version. Please read about our special times in the 'Student Writing' page.
I love this book! I used it many times when I taught Grade 2 (a long time ago)

Hi Grade Threes,
I am so glad that you are working on improving your Sentence Fluency. It was a great idea to graph the first word used in sentences to see which words are used again and again and agin. The next time you write, I am sure everyone will think twice before they begin.

Wow, this is an amazing activity, 3SS! I would like to use it in my Grade 4 class in Abu Dhabi.
I think our writing could benefit from doing the graphing activity, plus it fits in nicely with the data collection and graphing we've been doing in math! Thank you for sharing :)
PS, I love your Weebly site!!
